Gibraltar Chinese Association
The Gibraltar Chinese Association is a non-profit organization that was registered with the Gibraltar Ministry of Culture in October 2015. We strive to play an active role in relations between Gibraltar and China, fostering understanding and friendship between our nations. We believe sharing cultural experiences is both enjoyable and informative and results in a better understanding between peoples. Accordingly, we organize events in Gibraltar during the year which reflect important festivals in the Chinese calendar, such as Chinese New Year, the Lantern Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. We believe cultural exchange brings people together and enriches life, and can open doors to new ideas, friendships and opportunities. Such opportunities include trade, and we can act as a bridge in respect of trade between Gibraltar and China.
Reflecting the links of Gibraltar with the United Kingdom, our association has sought and received strong support from the Chinese embassy in the UK. Our association also seeks close relations with Chinese communities close to Gibraltar, and in this regard maintains contacts with leaders of Chinese associations within Europe.
Chinese New Year is an important traditional Chinese holiday celebrated between late January and early February each year. In China, it is also known as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year and is an official holiday.
Generally, the evening prior to the Chinese new year, Chinese families gather together for the annual reunion dinner, firecrackers are light up and money in red envelopes are given to send good wishes and luck.
The Chinese New Year Celebration in Gibraltar will take place on the
7 of February of 2019 with lion dances and KungFu show marking the Year of the Pig.
The parade will be from city hall to casemate square from 15:45 to 17:00 and in ocean village from 18:00 to 19:00, join us!
